CD Release Track Number Fifteen: My Love, (The Story)

By now you probably know that our worship team at Spirit & Life is releasing a full length, 15 song, all original CD on October 14. All of the songs are written by the worship team. This is the story behind “My Love” track number fourteen on the CD.
Have you ever thought you weren’t good enough, honest enough, giving enough or caring enough for God to actually love you? If you could just say something, give something or do something more, maybe you could earn that love. After all, we live in a culture that rewards performance. The better you perform at your job the more money you will earn. The funnier you are the more laughs you will get. The better artist you are the more respect you’ll receive. It’s all performance based. And that’s our American mindset.
My Love is a song about the truth of God’s love. While God certainly wants the best for us and from us, His love is never earned. King David of the Old Testament was a “man after God’s own heart,” yet most of his life he was a mess. He was an adulterer and a murderer and has been referred to as “one of history’s greatest sinners.” The 12 disciples Jesus chose to follow Him were flawed from head to toe. In fact it’s pretty difficult to find a single Bible character that wasn’t outwardly flawed. Yet God loved them.
Romans 8: 38-39 says, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
You cannot separate yourself from God’s love and you cannot earn God’s love. God’s love is wider than a canyon of pain, deeper than an ocean of tears and it covers the mistakes that you’ve made. Shame prevents us from the kind of success God wants us to have. Shame keeps that movie cycling inside your head that you are never enough. Shame prevents us from loving fully, making good choices and serving, giving and caring. Understanding and believing the truth of God’s love set me free.
My Love
What can I do, what can I say?
To earn Your love, another day
What can I give?
What is the price to pay?
What can I sing, what can I write?
To earn Your love another night
What can I give? What is the price to pay?
CHORUS
My love’s deeper than an ocean of tears
My love’s longer than a thousand years
My love’s wider than a canyon of pain My love…
My love covers the mistakes that you’ve made
And my love erases all the hate and the shame
My love lifts you from the ashes and fire
But my love, is never earned
