Our Goal: $20,000

We are asking the people who call Spirit & Life their church home to ask 20 people for $20 each to help provide initial capital funding for Spirit & Life's new church vision: to be a multiethnic and multigenerational church. Our goal is to raise $20,000. An anonymous donor has offered to match every dollar given up to $10,000, so we’re asking for your help in making the most of this match.

Our New Vision: A Multiethnic and Multigenerational Church

Spirit & Life Church was founded in 2010 with a vision to reach out to the growing community in and around Montclair, Virginia and eastern Prince William County. In recent months, our leadership has recognized that in order to be effective in our mission, we must reflect the community around us. Our region is quite diverse, with significant African American and Hispanic populations, as well as families of Asian descent. As many as 8% of students in our region identify as being a mix of 2 or more ethnicities. If we’re going to reach our neighbors, our church needs to look like our public school classrooms.

Moreover, we desire to incorporate people of all ages into the life of our church, seeking not to segregate according to age, but encouraging interaction and participation from people of all ages.

The Challenge

As we begin to live into our vision of becoming a multiethnic and multigenerational church, we know it won’t be easy on a number of fronts, including financial. Nationally, the average member of a predominantly white church gives $22/week. The average member of a multiethnic church gives $13/week. We are seeking to supplement our reserve funds to absorb the additional costs arising as a result of this transition. In the long term, we believe God will be faithful to us and bring growth through discipleship and generosity in giving. This campaign seeks to address the financial challenge we foresee in the short term.

Why It’s Worth It

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said that Sunday morning at 11:00am is the most segregated hour in America. In 2020, this is no longer true: our soccer fields and coffee shops and grocery stores weekly reflect the diversity of our community, and this is where you’ll find 75% of our neighbors on a Sunday morning. However, for the 25% who do attend church around here, 11:00am is still the most segregated hour in America. We desire to change that, and to have more of the 75% join us!

A Commitment to Service

In addition to supporting our transition to becoming a multiethnic church, your gift allows us to continue serving our community. Our mission statement orients our life of faith towards service. That orientation has borne fruit as we have sought to meet the real needs of the real people in our community. The graphic here shows what we have been able to achieve in the last 15 months. And we know God still has greater plans for us as a church. As our new vision leads to growth in membership, we seek to have an even greater impact in our community—and we invite you to be a part of it!
